Safe sex has come to the zoo.
Female monkeys, lions and tigers at Brookfield and Lincoln Park
zoos can have all the sex they please without getting pregnant.
Birth control is becoming as important in zoo management as good
food and clean cages. Zoos must serve as modern-day Noah's Arks for
endangered animals, but they're running out of space.
"We have to (carefully) manage the ark, so everybody can get on
it," said Dr. Nan Schaffer, a veterinarian and consultant to zoos in
Chicago, Milwaukee and Baltimore.
At Lincoln Park, contraception is used in lions, tigers,
leopards, timber wolves and several types of monkeys. Animals
