CAMBRIDGE, Mass. Wynton Marsalis, the 26-year-old trumpet superstar,
stood among eight awed Harvard University students and displayed the
difficult art of blowing into his horn while simultaneously taking in
more air through the nose.
After more than 100 continuous seconds of rotary breathing,
Marsalis rested while the students looked at each other in disbelief.
Then he explained the maneuver.
"It's just a gimmick," said the multiple Grammy Award winner. "I
do that in jazz so I can get applause."
The difficult maneuver came at the end of a 14-hour day for
Marsalis, who often schedules lectures and works with students when
he is not performing or recording jazz or classical albums.
