GWALIOR, India In the palace of a maharaja at a time set by the
stars, a prince and a princess were married Friday.
They exchanged garlands, and they walked seven times around
flames that made their gems sparkle and their gold shine.
Looking on, knowing they were envoking the grandeur of times
forever gone, were more than 50,000 people - among them hundreds of
former maharajas and maharanis.
The ornate ceremony of Mogul extravagance began at precisely
7:54 p.m. (it was 8:24 a.m. in Chicago). That was the time fixed as
most auspicious by princely astrologers for the marriage of Crown
Prince Vikramaditya Singh, 23, son of the last maharaja of Kashmir,
and Princess Chitrangada Raje ...
