Article: Jascha Heifetz, 86, great violinist of modern age

LOS ANGELES Jascha Heifetz, 86, the Russian-born prodigy whose sublime richness of tone and unparalleled poetic powers in interpreting the world's great composers made him the greatest violin virtuoso since Paganini, died early Friday.

He underwent brain surgery several weeks ago after falling in his Beverly Hills home. Death came in the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where he was hospitalized under the name Jim Hoyl - an alias he often used as a composer of popular songs.

He once told a reporter he wanted his obituary to be short - "just make it born in Russia, first lesson at 3, debut at 7, debut in America in 1917" - but the tributes were immediate and numerous.
