For the civilized world, it is so easy to look at South Africa's system of apartheid and feel revulsion for its backers, support for its foes and sadness for the country.

To despise the institution of apartheid is simple enough. But to understand the complex historical evolution of apartheid is even more important if this racist blight is to be abolished without the civil war it invites daily.

That's the underlying theme of a fascinating five-part series, "Frontline: Apartheid Specials," from PBS. Part 1 will air from 10:30 to 11:30 tonight on WTTW-Channel 11. (Parts 2 through 5 will air from 10:30 to 11:30 nightly through Friday.)
