Article: CTA parts `loans' probed // Repair firm got free equipment use

A CTA vendor was given more than $10,000 in new inventory last year from the transit agency's stockroom shelves, returning the material only after an investigation of CTA contract irregularities came to light several weeks ago.

The unusual arrangement with Calumet Armature Electric is one of several dealings between the company and the agency's Skokie repair shop that have come under scrutiny by CTA internal investigators, according to sources familiar with the investigation.

Calumet, a Riverdale firm, repairs L car electric motors for the CTA under a $435,000 annual contract.
