The CTA has canceled plans for a $596,000 repair contract and
stopped shipping L car motors needing repairs to a supplier after a
surprise inspection showed that the company has been ignoring strict
agency standards for the work.
The Dec. 14 inspection by the CTA's quality control team
revealed that Calumet Armature Electric has failed since September to
perform so-called "vacuum pressure impregnation" on electric L car
motors.
An anonymous phone call to the CTA prompted the inspection.
Vacuum pressure impregnation is a pivotal step in the process of
repairing L car motors aimed at preventing electrical short circuits
