La Bamba (1987; RCA/Columbia; 108 minutes; $89.95) Lou Diamond
Phillips stars in the story of Ritchie Valens, the 17-year-old
Mexican-American rock singer who died in a plane crash with Buddy
Holly and the Big Bopper. Valens' career was brief (he only had
three hits), but the movie paints an interesting portrait of his
family life and especially an uneven relationship with an older half
