Article: A smashing good time in Geneva

GENEVA, Switzerland Julius Caesar knew a good thing when he conquered one.

He noted the strong defensive position of the hill on which the Old Town of Geneva is built, wrote about the beautiful view across Lake Geneva, and ordered the destruction of the lone bridge across the Rhone River to prevent Teutonic tribes from invading the area. Then as now, Geneva was a trade and travel center of the Western world.

Through the centuries, men, beasts of burden, trucks and trains have transported spices and other exotic goods through the mountain passes of Switzerland. Sometimes they kept those goods for processing, which is how Switzerland became the world center of the chocolate industry.
