ROME Nicaragua's information minister on Saturday rejected
White House charges that President Daniel Ortega had threatened to
supply Salvadoran guerrillas with surface-to-air missiles if contra
rebels received more U.S. aid.
"The president said nothing like that," the minister, Manuel
Espinosa, said in Rome, where Ortega has had talks with Italian
leaders and Pope John Paul II.
"Nicaragua is working for and seeking peace in Central
America," he added.
On Friday, White House spokesman Marlin Fitzwater quoted a
Washington Times report of remarks by Salvadoran President Jose
Napoleon Duarte that Ortega had threatened to supply surface-to-air
missiles to Salvadoran guerrillas if new ...
