Article: Fermilab collider boosted // Report tells $3.28 billion `smasher' saving

Building the superconducting supercollider in Illinois will save the federal government $3.28 billion, says a study released Monday by a group pushing suburban Fermilab as the project's site.

"It's something different that no else can claim," said Donald Perkins, chairman of the group, SSC for Fermilab, referring to the cheaper cost of building in Illinois as opposed to that in the six other states vying for the project.

The group said the SSC can be built more quickly and inexpensively at Fermilab because Fermilab already has an operating accelerator, a campus, a work force trained in this technology, and computer software that can be applied readily to the SSC.
