Article: Masters, Johnson lack AIDS data

NEW YORK Sex researchers William Masters and Virginia Johnson concede they cannot supply scientific evidence to support their controversial claim that AIDS is "running rampant" among heterosexuals.

Asked at a stormy press conference here Monday how he could justify the conclusion, Masters said, "I simply believe this."

In a new book, Crisis: Heterosexual Behavior in the Age of AIDS, the sex researchers and a collaborator, Dr. Robert Kolodny, conclude that "the AIDS virus is now running rampant in the heterosexual community."

But at the press conference, Johnson said, "I'm not sure we chose the word `rampant' ourselves."
