Few rockers from the 1970s have weathered the '80s with more
grace and good humor than Robert Plant. On the early Led Zeppelin
albums, his lemon-squeezed shrieks were the sound of macho posturing
at its most shrill and witless, but he has since developed into a
vocalist of surprising suppleness, style and maturity.
Though his previous solo albums found Plant attempting to
distance himself from the Zeppelin legacy, his new album represents a
