Article: It's viral pneumonia for Phillies' Bedrosian

The Philadelphia Phillies got good news and bad news Saturday on the health of relief ace Steve Bedrosian.

First, the good news: Bedrosian doesn't have a strained muscle between the eighth and ninth ribs.

Now, the bad news:

Team physician Dr. Phillip Marone said Bedrosian has viral pneumonia.

Bedrosian, the 1987 Cy Young Award winner as the NL's best pitcher, was taken to the hospital Monday. After X-rays and tests, Marone said the pitcher had a strained intercostal muscle.

But Saturday in Clearwater, Fla., Marone had an update on Bedrosian's condition.

"He hasn't got a muscle strain," the doctor said. "Bedrosian has pneumonia in the left, lower lobe. It's pleurisy."
