JERUSALEM The ads say, "Come to Israel."
But you seriously wonder if you should. For the nightly news
sputters out sights and sounds you won't see in a travel brochure:
Jews and Arabs clashing in the ancient stone city of Jerusalem, in
settlements along the Israeli-occupied West Bank, in the Palestinian
refugee camps.
As tear gas settles, you wonder how this could possibly be the
land of milk and honey when the ancient roads where kings and
apostles once walked are patrolled today by military jeeps.
In 1988, Israel finds itself with an image problem when it
comes to tourism. And the strife is especially untimely, because
