It's do or die time for Jane M. Byrne and Aurelia Pucinski.

A defeat in today's Democratic primary for Circuit Court clerk would, the former mayor concedes, make her political history. Surprising as it seems, Byrne's only election victory was nine years ago.

For Pucinski, the Democratic Party's slated candidate, a loss to Byrne would derail a political career that once appeared starstruck. Pucinski was defeated in the 1986 primary race for secretary of state by Janice Hart, a disciple of Lyndon H. La Rouche Jr.

In an ironic twist, Hart is a candidate against Pucinski and Byrne, although her instant fame in 1986 make her chances this time virtually nil.
