Article: Pucinski burns Byrne

Aurelia Pucinski defeated Jane M. Byrne in Tuesday's Democratic primary for Circuit Court clerk, dooming the former mayor's hopes for a political comeback.

A somber Byrne, flanked by her husband, Jay McMullen, conceded the election shortly before 9:30 p.m. and pledged to support Pucinski in a November dogfight against Republican convert Edward R. Vrdolyak.

The 54-year-old Byrne said she wanted to "congratulate the winners and congratulate the Democratic Party, and I plan to support it."
