Aurelia Pucinski defeated Jane M. Byrne in Tuesday's Democratic
primary for Circuit Court clerk, dooming the former mayor's hopes for
a political comeback.
A somber Byrne, flanked by her husband, Jay McMullen, conceded
the election shortly before 9:30 p.m. and pledged to support Pucinski
in a November dogfight against Republican convert Edward R. Vrdolyak.
The 54-year-old Byrne said she wanted to "congratulate the
winners and congratulate the Democratic Party, and I plan to support
it."
Asked if her third straight defeat would mean the end of her
political career, Byrne said, "It means that when you say the people
spoke . . . they apparently shouted. And therefore, I'm very good at ...
