ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. If anyone should understand how Bob Horner
felt about Japan, his new boss, St. Louis manager Whitey Herzog,
seems the man.
A year ago, Horner had to cope with life in a strange land after
nine comfy seasons in the majors. Now Herzog must learn to feel at
home with a stranger - Horner - batting cleanup and playing first
base for his defending National League champions.
Japan was Horner's only ticket out of Atlanta when the free-agent
market dried up in 1987. Similarly, Horner became a last resort for
Herzog this year after ...
