More and more Americans are falling hook, line and sinker for
the sport of fishing.
Just check your local television listings. Weekend TV is full
of guys like Babe Winkelman telling you how to crank your bait, or
which hoojie is best for monster bluegills. One fishing expo leads
to another, with new shows springing up yearly. At last count, there
were six in the Chicago area.
Americans are spending billions each year on rods, reels and
fishing trips. Illinois, for example, has 1.9 million resident
fishermen, the seventh-highest number in the nation, said David
Rockland of the Sport Fishing Institute. "Fishing has never been
