NEW YORK Women and minorities have only a minuscule chance of
heading one of America's 3,300 colleges, according to a survey, "The
American College President: A Contemporary Profile."
The American Council on Education study found the typical
college president is white, male, married and 53 years old.
Among 2,105 respondents in the survey, 200 - or 9.5 percent -
were female. The minority contingent - 7 percent - included 100
black presidents, 37 Hispanics, 8 Asians and 3 American Indians.
Madeline Greene, director of the council's Center for Leadership
Development, said the first comprehensive profile of presidents will
be updated annually.
