MONTREAL Canada's French-flavored metropolis survives the wicked
Quebec winters by taking refuge in its renowned Underground City
network of concourses and subterranean buildings.
That annual siege of indoor survival may account for the gusto
with which the 2.8 million residents of this island agglomeration at
the confluence of the St. Lawrence and Ottawa rivers emerge each
spring to renew the vibrant street life that flourishes here in the
warm-weather months.
The whirl of outdoor activity set a zestful tempo for my
three-day Montreal visit last July. From the sidewalk cafes and
flower vendors in Old Montreal's Place Jacques-Cartier to the
after-dark classical-music trio and juggling ...
