JERUSALEM The chief Sephardic rabbi of Israel accused Austrian
President Kurt Waldheim on Wednesday of personal involvement in the
deportation of 50,000 Jews from Salonika, Greece, to the Nazis'
Auschwitz death camp.
It was the first time a senior Jewish clergyman with
quasi-governmental status had spoken against the Austrian chief of
state.
Addressing a ceremony marking the start of Israel's annual
Holocaust Memorial Day, Rabbi Mordechai Eliahu assailed "those who
have extended their hands" in friendship or courtesy to Waldheim, a
onetime secretary-general of the United Nations.
