Article: `Ivan' sentenced to die // He shouts innocence in killing of Jews

JERUSALEM John Demjanjuk, convicted last week of killing thousands of Jews at a Nazi concentration camp in World War II, emotionally declared his innocence and then sat stoically as he was sentenced Monday to be hanged for war crimes.

"I am innocent," the man convicted as the death camp guard "Ivan the Terrible" shouted in Hebrew in an Israeli court during a seven-minute plea to spare him the death sentence.

But a voice from among the spectators in the packed courtroon retorted "You are a liar," and cheers and applause erupted at the close of proceedings before the three-judge panel.
