BERKELEY, Calif. Outside the record company headquarters of Fantasy
Inc., on a drizzly day in January, Berkeley was being Berkeley. A
small but angry group of protesters was voicing its displeasure with
police for removing homeless people from an abandoned house across
the street. Up went the eerily familiar chant: "The whole world is
watching!"
Inside Fantasy, however, things couldn't have been more
uplifting. Alto saxophonist and bebop champion Frank Morgan, who not
too long ago was calling San Quentin home, was writing a new chapter
in his remarkable comeback story. He was recording a new album - not
just any album, but one consisting entirely of songs by alto genius
