Article: Cute koala faces endangered status

SYDNEY Australia's unique ambassador, the koala, is on the brink of becoming an endangered species as disease, land clearance and national apathy exact a heavy toll, leading experts said here Sunday.

The koala may become Australia's 26th endangered species within two years, World Koala Research Corp. research director Steve Brown said, contending that lack of attention given to the importance of koala research was "a national disgrace."

"The koala's survival is threatened by disease and habitat destruction, but the government does not seem to be accepting any responsibility," Brown said.

The major research on the furry marsupial is coming from Japan and the United States, he noted.
