Article: Kitchen no longer on the back burner

The traditional family is becoming a rarity, and so is the traditional kitchen.

That means a whole new world of requirements when designing or remodeling a kitchen, said Jim Krengel, design director for the Maytag Co.

"The traditional family isn't with us any more. Changing lifestyles are changing requirements so rapidly.

"When we talk about kitchens today we have to find out first, is it a one-cook or a two-cook family," he said.

"Now when people get together at the end of the day they get together in the kitchen and often cook together. A recent study shows about 20 percent of the men are cooking one meal a day," he said.
