MONTBARD, France Our week afloat in Burgundy began with a blast of
confetti at a full-dress civic parade, and a 2,000-year time trip to
a famous Gallo-Roman battlefield.
It ended with a morning Champagne toast in a farmer's field to
celebrate a fog-wrapped balloon ascension, and a dizzy round of
late-afternoon wine tasting along Burgundy's Route of the Grand Crus.
In between, we relished moments as sublime as a cafe encounter
with a French Resistance veteran who proudly wore a U.S. Purple Heart
and insisted on shaking hands with each of us four Americans.
