MAUTHAUSEN, Austria Pope John Paul II on Friday condemned the
"lunatic ideology" of Nazism on the spot where 122,766 World War II
prisoners died, but he angered Austria's chief rabbi by not
specifically mentioning Jewish victims.
And although the pope urged Jewish leaders in Austria to accept
the Vatican's call for a Palestinian homeland, he did not respond to
appeals for the Vatican to give full diplomatic recognition to
Israel.
John Paul II's two-hour visit to the Mauthausen death camp was
the emotional high point of a day in which his actions clearly failed
to mollify Jews already angry over his meetings with Austrian
