BUDAPEST In an unprecedented dispute between two East bloc allies, Romanian party chief Nicolae Ceausescu has openly questioned whether Romania should continue to maintain diplomatic relations with Hungary.

The Hungarian-speaking minority in the mountainous wooded area of Transylvania, which was ceded to Romania after World War I, is at the root of the problem.

Relations reached an all-time low Tuesday when Romania ordered the closure of the Hungarian consulate-general in the Transylvania capital of Cluj and gave diplomats 48 hours to leave the country.
