BUDAPEST Hungary and Romania exchanged diplomatic barbs Thursday
in an escalating confrontation over Romania's treatment of its ethnic
Hungarian minority.
Hungary said that Romania's closure of a Hungarian consulate and
a cultural center violates international agreements and "seriously
damages Hungarian-Romanian relations," the news agency MTI reported.
Romania took the actions after about 40,000 Hungarians, tacitly
supported by the government, demonstrated at the Romanian Embassy in
Budapest on Monday, protesting Romania's plan to raze half of the
nation's 15,000 villages, including Hungarian-speaking villages, for
the sake of modernization.
