Article: Palmetto tree has strong roots in S. Carolina

One balmy spring afternoon not long ago, a formal ceremony was conducted at the South Carolina statehouse in Columbia. Gov. Carroll Campbell was the principal speaker.

Although the capital city is more than 100 miles inland, the subject of gentle sea breezes and palmetto trees was as much the featured topic of discussion as was the purpose of the gathering: the unveiling of the first commemorative stamp issued with the new first-class postage rate.

The timing of the ceremonies had been set to mark the bicentennial anniversary of South Carolina's ratification of the constitution. It was the eighth state to do so.
