BOSTON The Boston Red Sox suspended veteran Jim Rice for three
days without pay Thursday as a result of an altercation with new
manager Joe Morgan after Rice was lifted for a pinch hitter against
Minnesota Wednesday night.
The suspension, which took effect before the start of a
four-game series with the White Sox, was announced by general manager
Lou Gorman.
"You can't allow any player on the club to question the
manager's judgment in any situation during the ballgame," Gorman
said.
"You can't have players undermining their authority.
The manager runs the ballclub, and if someone challenges that
authority, you've got to take some action."
