Article: Iran, Iraq agree to join UN's peace talks

In a major step toward ending eight years of war in the Persian Gulf, Iraq and Iran agreed Friday to take part in peace talks at the United Nations next week and to allow UN military experts to visit the region to work out details of a truce.

UN Secretary-General Javier Perez de Cuellar invited the warring nations to send high-level officials to New York City for "intensive discussions" after Iran rejected an Iraqi demand for direct negotiations between the two states.

It was unclear whether Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Velayati and Iraqi Foreign Minister Tariq Aziz would meet face to face or indirectly under the mediation of Perez de Cuellar.
