A decade-old book inspired Carolyn MacLean and Scott Swanson in
their search for "perfect love."
A Severe Mercy: C. S. Lewis and a Pagan Love Invaded by Christ,
Told by One of the Lovers was written by Sheldon Vanauken, and the
true story sounds much like the secret marriage and mysterious
disappearance of the Wheaton College couple.
Swanson and MacLean turned up in San Diego, where Swanson told
reporters Wednesday night, "Severe Mercy had a lot of influence on
our relationship" but did not lead them to vanish nearly four months
ago.
The book, published in 1977, tells of Vanauken and his late
wife, Jean, who were secretly wed and fled aboard a yacht.
