The Cubs have never really been in the race and never will be
this year. The '88 Cubs mirror the '69 Cubs: Both teams have as good
a starting lineup as any team in either league. The starting
pitching is good enough to keep them in most games. What they lack
is a strong bullpen, a bench and a starting center fielder.
The tired bats of late are a direct result of lack of depth off
the bench. Like Leo Durocher, Don Zimmer is a good manager but he
needs better personnel. The only solution is a trade. How about
Jody Davis, Rick Sutcliffe, Mark Grace and Jerry Mumphrey for the
Yankees' Don Mattingly, Mike Pagliarulo and Joel Skinner?
