Article: Can the Cubs get back in the NL East race?

The Cubs have never really been in the race and never will be this year. The '88 Cubs mirror the '69 Cubs: Both teams have as good a starting lineup as any team in either league. The starting pitching is good enough to keep them in most games. What they lack is a strong bullpen, a bench and a starting center fielder.

The tired bats of late are a direct result of lack of depth off the bench. Like Leo Durocher, Don Zimmer is a good manager but he needs better personnel. The only solution is a trade. How about Jody Davis, Rick Sutcliffe, Mark Grace and Jerry Mumphrey for the Yankees' Don Mattingly, Mike Pagliarulo and Joel Skinner? Barry C. McCann Crown Point, Ind.
