JERUSALEM King Hussein's decision Sunday to separate the
occupied West Bank from Jordan and transfer responsibility for its 1
million Palestinian inhabitants to the Palestine Liberation
Organization drew cautious reactions from the people concerned.
The Arab monarch's new policy toward the area seized by Israel
21 years ago was preceded by last week's termination of a Jordanian
$5 billion development program for the disputed area.
At the same time, Hussein dispersed Jordan's lower house of
parliament, half of whose members are Palestinians from the West
Bank, and said West Bank Palestinians no longer would be included in
its ranks.
