WASHINGTON It's a jungle in the juice aisle. There are practically
as many label variations as there are botanical designations: 100
percent pure, 100 percent natural, 100 percent juice. Fruit punch,
fruit blend, fruit drink, juice drink. Ten percent juice, 20 percent
juice, no percentage listed. Cherry flavor with other natural
flavors, cherry fruit-juice cocktail, apple cherry fruit blend.
A few months ago a brouhaha erupted when Ralph Nader and a
consumer group berated the Food and Drug Administration for not
requiring that the labels for juice-based beverages list the
percentage of juice contained within. Other than for orange juice,
