Article: Navy bans risque shows

WASHINGTON The Navy said Thursday it is banning topless dancers and other sexually oriented entertainment at base clubs for officers and sailors in response to allegations that it encourages abusive behavior toward women.

The prohibition, contained in revised regulations for Navy mess operations, was signed June 30 by Vice Adm. Leon A. Edney, the chief of naval personnel, and distributed to Navy bases around the world.

The Navy said the move was approved by Adm. Carlisle A. H. Trost, chief of naval operations, and is effective immediately.

The new rules specify that all entertainment at base clubs must meet "appropriate standards of discretion, modesty and good taste."
