Some people who are 20 percent over their normal weight suffer
from depression. Why these people eat too much is not fully
understood. Freudian-trained psychologists and psychiatrists
believed people overate because when they were children their mothers
gave them food when anything unpleasant happened to them.
Psychopharmacology, the study of drugs that affect the brain,
has debunked many of Freud's theories. Today, there are drugs to
treat manic depression by restoring brain chemicals to normal
function, allowing people who once were permanently hospitalized to
live normal lives.
