Strides are being made in the development of effective
anti-anxiety agents that do not produce the side effects associated
with those now in widespread use, according to a specialist at New
York University Medical Center.
"These broadly prescribed drugs, which are classed as minor
tranquilizers, sedatives or hypnotics (sleep inducers), belong to a
chemical family called benzodiazepines. They have proven useful in a
variety of situations," observed Dr. Norman Sussman, clinical
associate professor of psychiatry at the center and director of
psychopharmacology at its affiliate, Bellevue Hospital Center.
Among the most widely used of these agents are diazepam (Valium
