Article: New drug relieves anxiety without harmful side effects

Strides are being made in the development of effective anti-anxiety agents that do not produce the side effects associated with those now in widespread use, according to a specialist at New York University Medical Center.

"These broadly prescribed drugs, which are classed as minor tranquilizers, sedatives or hypnotics (sleep inducers), belong to a chemical family called benzodiazepines. They have proven useful in a variety of situations," observed Dr. Norman Sussman, clinical associate professor of psychiatry at the center and director of psychopharmacology at its affiliate, Bellevue Hospital Center.
