ST. LOUIS In 1936, Joseph Pulitzer bought his first of many
masterpieces, Amedeo Modigliani's "Elvira Resting at a Table." He
later donated the work to the St. Louis Art Museum in memory of his
first wife, Louise Vauclain. Today, the museum again benefits from
Pulitzer's acquisitions; through Aug. 28, it is exhibiting select
works from his modern art collection.
Pulitzer's initial purchase led to more bouts with the art
collecting "disease," as he once described it. With his marriage to
his second wife, Emily, the illness intensified for Pulitzer, now the
publisher of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. The result is a remarkable
collection of art.
