Article: Fate of Pakistan hinges on three military chiefs

ISLAMABAD Mohammad Zia ul-Haq's death has removed a barrier blocking Benazir Bhutto's road to power, but the opposition leader still faces many obstacles and some say a new period of martial law in Pakistan is possible.

The enmity between Bhutto and Zia, the general who deposed her father in a military coup in 1977, was so great that few Pakistanis saw any chance of her becoming prime minister while he still led the army.

That obstacle was removed Wednesday when Zia's plane exploded and crashed near Bahawalpur in Punjab province. The authorities strongly suspect sabotage, according to a senior official.
