FRANKFURT, West Germany An international spy ring, broken with
the arrest of a former U.S. Army sergeant, another American soldier
and six other people, sold NATO defense secrets to the Soviet Union
at high prices for a decade, officials said Thursday.
It was too early to know how much damage was caused to Western
security, officials said, but the ring is believed to have stolen
documents concerning NATO defense plans for Europe and U.S. Army
contingency plans for a ground war with the Soviet Union in Europe.
Some military experts compared the ring to the Walker family spy
ring that was cracked in 1985. U.S. officials say that was one of
