Article: Mid-Suburban on top // Catholic League falls from area dominance

Old-timers who remember when the Chicago Catholic League was recognized as the most dominant high school football conference in the United States for nearly a half-century will be hard-pressed to accept it isn't No. 1 any longer.

Not even in the Chicago area.

Move over, Catholic League, make way for the Mid-Suburban League.

From 1976 through 1981, Catholic League representatives won five state championships and finished second once. The Mid-Suburban had one second.

Since then, however, the Mid- Suburban has claimed two state titles and a second and had three semifinalists. The Catholic League has settled for two state runnersup and four semifinalists.
