At 6-11 and 280 pounds, Mel Turpin stands out even when
surrounded by his colleagues in the National Basketball Association,
where he's earned a living the last four years.
In Clinton, Ill., a rural farming community of 8,000 that he
calls home, Turpin sticks out even more, like a cottonwood tree in a
corn field.
"It's quiet here and we can let our son go outside anytime we
want without worrying about him being snatched," Turpin said. "I
like the country, and here we aren't too far from it."
Turpin, who was traded to the Utah Jazz a year ago after three
seasons with the Cleveland Cavaliers, moved to Clinton this summer
with wife, Lisa L'Hote, and 3-year-old son, A.J.
