Police officers chasing two currency exchange holdup suspects
down a busy Loop street Monday afternoon opened fire, and two women
bystanders and one of the suspected robbers were wounded.
Each bystander was shot in a leg, and both women were reported
in good condition at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Both suspects
later were captured hiding in the Chicago Title & Trust Building,
where the exchange is located.
Police officials, who had conferred for seven hours before
commenting on the incident late Monday night, said Officer Gregory
Stevenson, 39, was justified in shooting at the suspects.
The suspects had not been charged as of early today.
