Q. I know that fiber is supposed to be good for you, but I've also heard that it can help a person lose weight, and I'm confused as to how this can be. If it does happen to be true, what is there about fiber that makes a person lose weight?

A. Fiber-rich foods, such as fruits and vegetables, are generally low in calories. In addition, these foods enhance the feeling of fullness, so a person doesn't feel like eating as much; therefore, someone who eats fiber-rich foods will probably eat less high-calorie foods. Finally, high-fiber foods usually take longer to chew and longer to digest.
