Article: Nursing homes in Illinois `bar' AIDS patients

AIDS patients essentially have been barred from Illinois nursing homes because of financial barriers and fear, according to a new state-funded report.

The study found that there are no nursing home beds in Illinois specifically for use by people with acquired immune deficiency syndrome, although 75 such beds are currently needed, said Kirby Holland, of First Health Care Ltd., a nursing home management firm based in Dixon.

Holland said Thursday that some patients have been quietly admitted to nursing homes under diagnoses other than AIDS.
