Article: Hartigan seeks $1 million for '90 bid

In preparation for a 1990 bid for the Illinois governorship, Attorney General Neil F. Hartigan is seeking to raise a $1 million political war chest by the end of the year.

Hartigan, making his third attempt to win a Democratic gubernatorial nomination, is expected to collect about $400,000 Wednesday night at a fund-raising reception at the Chicago Hilton and Towers.

In his two previous gubernatorial campaigns, Hartigan withdrew in favor of better-known candidates, former Secretary of State Michael J. Howlett in 1976 and former Sen. Adlai E. Stevenson III in 1986. Hartigan has assured political allies that he will not abandon his candidacy next time.
