Article: Group-homes proposal stirs boos in Wilmette

The controversial proposal to allow group homes in Wilmette sparked a sometimes raucous public hearing Thursday night in the north suburb.

Some 700 residents, a majority of them group-home opponents, packed the Regina Dominican High School auditorium for the first long-awaited hearing on the village's proposed zoning ordinance.

"I have to ask the question: Why change Wilmette?" said Perry Kuzma, an opponent of the draft of the zoning proposal. "Every resident has the same question I do."

Kuzma was among the speakers who were roundly cheered by the majority of ordinance opponents, who also booed and jeered advocates at the three-hour hearing.
